Tesla Powerwall’s can be used without solar panels. Most energy companies will give you a tariff where you pay a lower rate for energy at night, allowing you to charge your Tesla Powerwall with cheaper energy to use during the day when prices are higher.

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is the current battery offered in the UK. It replaces the Tesla Powerwall 2 which was phased out in 2024.

This depends on the types of appliances you use, your home’s energy source, how many solar panels you have if you’re using solar generation and the size of your household. Generally, a Tesla Powerwall can keep your property self-sufficient throughout Spring and Autumn if used in conjunction with a suitable-sized solar PV array. Tesla will be releasing expansion packs for larger households that use more electricity to give you more capacity to store energy.

Tesla batteries are specifically designed for power outages and will start powering your home should your mains power fail, providing you have enough charge in your battery. They can power the average home with several appliances running for hours, meaning that power outages won’t affect your life. With a Tesla Powerwall, you’ll always have backup power, provided there is enough stored energy in the unit.

Tesla Powerwall’s are an ideal way to reduce the cost of your energy bills, whether you have an existing solar PV system or not. Stored energy generated from your solar panels can be used at night when there’s no sunlight to charge your solar panels, meaning you can use renewable energy for longer. You can also store electricity from the grid overnight when the price per kWh is lower, then use it during the day when the price per kWh is higher to cut costs. Your Tesla Powerwall can also reduce costs associated with power cuts by providing power continuously to appliances like freezers or heating systems.

The Tesla Powerwall 3 has new functionality where you can add expansion packs to your system to get up to 40.5 kWh of extra storage per phase. If you have multiple phases, then you can add a Powerwall battery storage system per phase and add expansion packs to them. Each expansion unit is 13.5 kWh and you do not need to put an application in to the DNO before we can install the expansion packs.

This means that you can benefit from cheaper electricity sooner.

Please bear in mind that if you do choose to have your expansion packs stacked there will be additional costs for mounting kits depending on how many you choose.

The Tesla Powerwall comes with a 10-year warranty, and its lifespan will depend on how much you use your battery, but most customers report that it can last 20 years or more.

The Powerwall Gateway is the control system for your Powerwall battery. It works with your energy supplier, be it from your solar panels or the National Grid, to control the energy going to your battery. You need 1 Gateway per phase, and most residential properties have 1 phase. If you have more than 1 phase, you will need a Gateway and Tesla Powerwall for each phase to balance the system.

The Tesla app allows you to monitor and control your Powerwall remotely. You can view real-time energy usage, track energy generation and storage, and customise settings for optimal performance and energy savings.
